The brief glimpse we got of the new Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro earlier this year suggests that the two devices might look a little sleeker, but they don’t look all that meaningfully different. However, if nothing else, it should make for a Google-branded flagship that’s distinct from both the new iPhone 14 and Samsung’s Galaxy S22. As it stands, the Google Pixel 7 is expected to boast a 6.2-inch OLED screen with a 90Hz refresh rate, 1080p resolution and flat edges. Meanwhile, the Google Pixel 7 Pro is said to be kitted out with a larger 6.7-inch OLED screen with a 1440p resolution, a 120Hz refresh rate and curved edges. Those dimensional deviations aside, we expect that both devices will boast all the bells, whistles and creature comforts seen in last year’s crop of Pixel devices. Both the Google Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro are likely to be IP68-rated for water resistance and incorporate an in-display fingerprint sensor, stereo speakers, 5G connectivity and an always-on display. If you’re more price-conscious, you’ll likely navigate towards the standard Google Pixel 7. On the other hand, those who can afford to spend more may be drawn to the more premium capabilities of the pricey but powerful Google Pixel 7 Pro.

Given that Google’s first-generation silicon has now made its way into the company’s budget-friendly Google Pixel 6a, it’s no surprise that you’ll find a second-generation effort inside the Google Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro that offers better performance over last year’s house-brand silicon. As for RAM, expect to see the same split between the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro that as you did with Google’s sixth-generation smartphones. The Pixel 7 will ship with 8GB of RAM and the Pixel 7 Pro will sweeten the deal for power users with a whopping 12GB of RAM. That divide mirrors the one between the Samsung Galaxy S22 and the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra. Meanwhile, the Pixel 7 ships with either 128GB or 256GB of onboard storage while the Pixel 7 Pro should offer those same options alongside a larger 512GB variant. The Google Pixel 7 comes kitted out with a dual-lens rear camera that combines 50MP main sensor with 12MP ultrawide sensor. As with last year’s Pixel devices, the Pixel 7 Pro will add a third 48MP telephoto lens into the mix. As for selfie shooters, both devices boast a more-or-less identical 11MP front-facing camera. Despite these hardware tweaks, the expectation is that Google’s software is likely to offer up the biggest improvements here. If the Google Pixel 6 Pro saw Google graduate to higher megapixel sensors in their smartphone cameras, this year’s software promises to tame the quirks of those larger sensors and fully harness the potential of the hardware. We’ll have to wait for the full reveal of this year’s Pixel flagships to see what possibilities that enhancement and refinement might entail. Still, the fact that Google was so willing to show off the design for this year’s Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro ahead of time might speak to the company’s broader confidence about the camera and what it can offer consumers this time round. If you’re someone who cares a lot about the capabilities of their smartphone camera, the Pixel 7 Pro is definitely going to be one to watch out for. Android 13 also brings with it support for spatial audio, Apple-like copy-and-paste between Android phones and tablets, app-specific language settings and new personalisation options. Last year’s Pixel 6 had a 4,614 mAh battery while the Pixel 6 Pro had a 5,000mAh battery. Given that battery life was a weakness noted by many reviewers at the time, it’s easy to imagine Google squeezing a few extra milliamps into the mix this time around.However, the reality is a little less clear-cut. The new Pixel 7 has a smaller 4355mAh battery. Meanwhile, the Pixel 7 Pro has a 5000mAh battery on par with the one found in last year’s Pixel 6 Pro.
